A winter walk with the family can be a lovely way to break up a weekend. It is much easier to enjoy when nobody is hunting for gloves at the car and the walk home finishes before the light goes.
Start with the way home
Choose the route around the youngest or least confident walker, including the return journey. A familiar park loop with an easy way back can be a better choice than a distant viewpoint. Agree a latest turnaround time before leaving, and change it if the group slows down.
Pack the things you will need first where you can reach them: waterproofs, spare layers, snacks and a light. Keep dry clothes separate from used or damp kit. Children can help choose a snack or spot landmarks, but an adult should keep track of the route and shared essentials.
For a Christmas holiday outing, a short walk followed by lunch at home is a complete plan. You do not need to turn every free afternoon into a long hike.
Check the forecast and conditions underfoot before leaving. Carry navigation, a working light, food, water and suitable layers, and choose a route within the whole group’s experience.
