The spare fleece is only useful if it is still dry when you need it. On a family walk, one wet coat or leaking bottle can quickly undo a carefully packed bag.
Give wet clothes their own space
Pack clean layers together before leaving and reserve a different bag or compartment for wet waterproofs. Putting a used raincoat back beside dry socks is an easy mistake when everyone is ready to get moving.
If you are packing for more than one child, group spare clothing by person. That makes a quick change easier and avoids emptying the whole backpack onto damp ground. Leave enough room to close a roll-top bag correctly; its stated capacity is not a reason to force in one more jumper.
At home, empty every compartment, including the ones that look dry. Let the bags and clothing dry fully before putting the walking kit away.
