Family Tent Space: Will Your Beds and Bags Actually Fit?

Two-Room Family Camping Tent — L

A tent's person rating does not show you where the spare clothes will go or how you will reach the door after bedtime. For family camping, start with the beds you actually plan to use.

Mark out a normal evening at camp

Lay out your sleeping mats or airbeds at home and measure the whole arrangement. Add the bags that need to stay inside, then leave a clear route to the entrance. Check the shape of the sleeping room, not just the outer tent footprint.

Think about bedtime as well. If children settle earlier than adults, a separate living area may help keep the sleeping space quieter. In Ascent's two-room tent listing, the large option has two sleeping rooms; the small option has one. They are different layouts, not simply different sizes of the same room.

If a tent is a joint Christmas present, decide on the layout together. It is a bigger decision than choosing a colour.

  • Large: two sleeping rooms and a central living area
  • Small: one sleeping room and a living area
  • Mesh openings

The two sizes have different internal layouts. Compare the floor plan and selected option carefully; do not choose by a maximum head-count claim.
